Expressions of Place

The Vineyards

Though just 30 miles long and five miles wide, Napa Valley is home to an extraordinary range of terroirs. Across its 16 distinct appellations, differences in soil, elevation, and climate give rise to wines of remarkable individuality. By sourcing fruit from throughout the valley, HALL captures the unique character and sense of place that define Napa Valley's most exceptional vineyards.

The Vines

Great wine begins in the vineyard. HALL sources fruit from some of Napa Valley’s finest sites, with approximately half of our grapes coming from our estate vineyards and the remainder from carefully selected grower partners throughout the valley.

Spanning roughly 150 acres, our estate vineyards range from ancient riverbeds on the valley floor to sun-drenched hillside sites, planted primarily to classic Bordeaux varietals. Each vineyard was chosen for its unique elevation, microclimate, and soil composition, allowing us to match the right varietals to the right terroir.

Led by Director of Vineyard Operations Don Munk, our viticulture team practices meticulous small-vine farming to produce low-yield, intensely concentrated fruit. Every vineyard block is managed individually, with farming decisions tailored to its specific varietal, clone, rootstock, row orientation, and site characteristics. Through sustainable farming practices and a relentless focus on quality, we cultivate fruit that expresses the distinctive character of Napa Valley.

Bergfeld Vineyard

Originally planted in 1859 by New England sea captain William Peterson, our St. Helena Bergfeld vineyard was among the first in Napa Valley. The name is in homage to wine pioneer Robert Bergfeld, who owned the property from 1894 until 1910.

The St. Helena valley floor is protected from western winds and warmed by the heat reflected off the hillsides. As a result, St. Helena is one of the warmest sub-appellations in Napa Valley with summer temperatures typically hovering in the mid-90s Fahrenheit.

The vineyard is situated on the valley floor in the path of an ancient tributary of the Napa River and the well-drained gravelly soils heighten the concentration and intensity of the red varietals we farm here. Red wines hailing from the St. Helena AVA are typically ripe and jammy, balanced by a firm, rich tannin structure.

Hardester Ranch Vineyard

This peaceful Pope Valley vineyard in the Napa Valley AVA is pristine farmland, isolated from the busyness of the lower Napa Valley, reminding us of times gone by.

Just beyond majestic Howell Mountain, a few miles northeast of Rutherford in the western crook of Napa Valley’s Pope Valley, sits Hardester Ranch. 254 acres undulate along the base of the mountain; 144 select acres are planted to vine. Serpentine roads cut through steep canyons leading to this hidden piece of Napa Valley, a bucolic terroir that sees very warm summers and cold winters, little rain, and generous sunshine.

Primarily, Cabernet Sauvignon is planted in Hardester’s alluvial clay loam. The fruit is vivid and focused, rich, and fleshy. Deep, dark mountain flavors ride on intense aromatics. Steve Leveque and his winemaking team find this fruit to be the perfect foundation for HALL’s Napa Valley cuvées, supplying a purity of ripe, fragrant fruit that serves as the well-defined core of our blends.

Cook Vineyard

The Cook Vineyard is a 25-acre vineyard development in the north east portion of the St. Helena AVA. Located next to the Kayli Morgan Vineyard, this site is at the base of the eastern foot hills in rocky, alluvial soils including minimal Bale Loam soils. Formerly an old vine Zinfandel site (pictured), our Cook Vineyard is now being planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and is ideally located for high-end Cabernet Sauvignon production.

This warm climate vineyard produces Cabernet Sauvignon that is classically fruit-forward and displays notes of dark opulent, jammy fruit with well-balanced acidity and firm tannins for long cellaring.

Dellar-Friedkin Vineyard

The Dellar-Friedkin Vineyard is strategically located on rocky soils in the Napa Valley AVA, and ranges in elevation from 250-350 feet above sea level. This site consists of 8.3 acres of hillside vineyards located in the Soda Canyon area. The soil is extremely rocky, which promotes low to moderate vigor creating balanced mountain tannins.

This vineyard produces Cabernet Sauvignon that is classically fruit-forward, supple, and displays notes of dark opulent fruit with well-balanced acidity. It is specifically located for high end Cabernet Sauvignon production, with 1815 vines per acre. The climate is moderately warm with afternoon marine winds cooling the warmer air from the surrounding hillsides.

Rainin Vineyard

Our winegrowing partners Jen and Frances Rainin own a beautiful, intimate vineyard estate on the steep, rocky volcanic soils of Diamond Mountain. The unique site, soils, and climate in this location coalesce to produce wines of extraordinary complexity and nuance. In the exceptional years, we create a vineyard-designated “Rainin Vineyard” Cabernet Sauvignon in limited quantities.

This wine represents a ‘micro-selection’ of the finest barrels from our most treasured lots. These wines demonstrate the opulent dark fruit, dark spice, and cocoa flavors that are characteristic of the Diamond Mountain District.

Sacrashe Vineyard

Craig and Kathryn Hall purchased Sacrashe, their first Napa Valley vineyard, in 1995. Intrigued by Rutherford terroir and the locale’s pedigree, the Hall's fell in love with Sacrashe’s serenity and sweeping vistas. They built their home at the summit of the rolling vineyard and constructed the HALL Rutherford Winery at the northwestern edge of the parcel.

One of Rutherford’s distinctive characteristics is that it has a higher radiant value than many other parts of Napa Valley, meaning that it spends more time in the sun. Located at the widest point between the Mayacamas and Vaca mountain ranges, the Rutherford AVA encompasses approximately 6 square miles. The diurnal range allows Rutherford fruit to ripen at a steady pace.

Beller Vineyard

The Beller Vineyard, spanning 17.1 acres, graces a hilltop peninsula that extends northward from the primary slopes of Mount Veeder. Owned by Ron Beller, this vineyard has been an integral part of the Mount Veeder bottlings for numerous years. The vineyard comprises eight distinct blocks primarily planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, with small proportions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.

While the vineyard’s elevation largely keeps it above the fog, its southern proximity to the San Pablo Bay introduces cool maritime breezes that delay ripening. This extended hangtime contributes to the profound dark fruit and deep texture characteristic of the wines.

The vineyard’s aspect and open exposure, atop a hilltop peninsula, limit the shading from the deep forests which is often encountered on Mount Veeder, resulting in dense fruit flavors reflective of ample sun exposure.
