"Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Exzellenz is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, coming from the Sacrache Vineyard, which is organically farmed. It comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant notes of blueberry pie and warm cassis, leading to a fragrant undercurrent of lavender oil, iron ore, and licorice with a touch of tar. The full-bodied palate is velvety and vibrant with black and blue fruit flavors, supported by fine-grained tannins, finishing long and whispery."

The 2023 Exzellenz radiates power. Deep, nuanced aromas of dark cherry laced with freshly tilled earth come alive on the nose. Blackberry and black plum flavors frame the palate, along with notes of dusty stone and toasted spice. The dense, tightly knit tannins provide elegant structure that carries through to a finish of decadent purity.

Located just above the eastern edge of the Rutherford appellation at 790 feet, Sacrashe provides a profound expression of what hillside Cabernet Sauvignon can be.

Challenging Soil Conditions

Extremely limiting volcanic tuff soils are mixed with rock and lie over a structure of bedrock. These challenging conditions yield fruit that is rich, dense, earthy, and opulent.

Unique Climate

The cooling effects of Lake Hennessey, combined with southern sun exposure, result in additional berry complexity that is reflected in the wine's dense fruit flavors.

The goal here is dark black fruit, power, chewy tannin, and a focused palate. Our Sacrashe Estate vineyard is hidden atop the eastern ridge of the Vaca Mountain Range in Rutherford. With extremely limiting volcanic tuff soils and gentle sloping aspects, this vineyard yields fruit that is always rich, dense, earthy, and opulent - it possesses a purity of focus and dense tannic structure.

Vintage Notes

The 2023 growing season was all about patience. A very long, wet winter replenished the soils and filled our reservoirs. Cooler spring weather delayed budbreak and the start of the growing season by several weeks. Late spring saw moderate warmth and led to substantial canopy growth, as well as a healthy crop load on the vines. Mild, warm temperatures created perfect ripening conditions throughout the summer and early fall. The longer hang time allowed the fruit to reach optimum ripeness, and resulted in a superb vintage that is fresh, full of flavor, with great balance and fruit density.
