Vinous, Antonio Galloni

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Montagna Vineyards captures the essence of this site on Pritchard Hill. Intense red-toned fruit, cedar, tobacco, rose petal, espresso, spice and mint infuse the palate as this heady, layered Cabernet shows off its alluring personality. Montagna is such an evocative site. Winemaker Megan Gunderson captured all of its sensuality and character. The 2021 was fermented in equal parts concrete and tank.

Vineyard notes

Montagna Vineyards

Located at the western edge of Pritchard Hill, on the Vaca Mountain slopes overlooking Lake Hennessey's southern shore.

La Presa Block

At 1,500 feet, the Montagna Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon benefits from a south-facing aspect ensuring ample maturation, usually above the fog line. The cooler days and warmer nights enable gradual grape ripening.

Volcanic Aiken Series Soils

This shallow soil ranges from 12 to 18 inches deep, compelling vine roots to seek nourishment deep within the rock. These challenging conditions yield wines of remarkable concentration and complexity.

Vintage Notes

The alluring 2021 vintage is notable for its low yields, which resulted in an extra degree of concentration in our wines. In a second year of severe drought, the vines grew quickly in the warm spring weather while our team carefully managed irrigation block by block. By summer, the vines had set a lighter than average crop, and cooler weather in August allowed time for multiple vineyard passes to finetune the fruit load and manage the canopy. After a smooth harvest season, we are excited about the beautifully balanced, flavor-packed 2021's.
