Brooding and earth-driven, the 2023 1873 opens with powerful aromas of crushed rocks, blackberry, and earth. The dense palate is driven by fine, powerful, tightly-wound tannins and balanced acidity. Integrated French oak aromatics of dark spice and clove carry the wine through its lengthy finish.

Wine Facts

In 1873, Captain William Peterson came to Napa and established a pioneering winery on our St. Helena property. Throughout the 1930’s and 40’s, the site grew to become Napa’s most important winery, producing nearly 40% of its entire vintage. The fruit for our “Eighteen Seventy-Three” hails from the rugged mountain slopes that frame Napa Valley. Power and individuality underscore this wine, a deliberate intent to commemorate the trailblazing spirit of Napa’s first vintners.

Vintage Notes

The 2023 growing season was all about patience. A very long, wet winter replenished the soils and filled our reservoirs. Cooler spring weather delayed budbreak and the start of the growing season by several weeks. Late spring saw moderate warmth and led to substantial canopy growth, as well as a healthy crop load on the vines. Mild, warm temperatures created perfect ripening conditions throughout the summer and early fall. The longer hang time allowed the fruit to reach optimum ripeness, and resulted in a superb vintage that is fresh, full of flavor, with great balance and fruit density.
