"Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Bergfeld bursts with bold notes of crème de cassis, blueberry pie, and ripe, juicy plums, plus hints of violets, dark chocolate, and mint tea. Full-bodied, the palate is plump and juicy while maintaining wonderful brightness, featuring plush tannins and a racy line, finishing with a minty lift. This comes from Block 10 of the vineyard around the original winery, which is farmed organically."

"From the estate property in St Helena, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Bergfeld is a cedary, full-bodied effort that spent 22 months in 65% new French oak. Predominantly red-fruited, it offers up cherries and raspberries outlined in cedar and vanilla, with a supple, slightly warm mouthfeel and a concentrated, softly tannic finish. Given the slightly elevated alcohol (labeled at 15.4%), it may be best enjoyed on the younger side, say over the next decade."

Tasting notes

The highly aromatic nose of 2023 Bergfeld carries aromas of boysenberry and pie crust, with floral and earthy undertones. Exotic flavors of wild berry coulis, 5-spice, black tea and cedar come through on the palate. Dense, lush and powerful tannins lead into a long and intensely fruity finish.

Historic Bergfeld Vineyard

First planted in 1873, the Bergfeld Vineyard lies along the western benchland of the St. Helena appellation, celebrated for its refined expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon.

St. Helena AVA

Renowned for being one of the warmer appellations in Napa Valley, benefitting from its distance from the marine effects of the San Pablo Bay.

Well-Drained Soils

The vines are planted in an ancient Sulphur Creek bed marked by nutritional challenges, abundant rock and gravel, and exceptional drainage.

Wine Facts

Our St. Helena Estate vineyard is planted in alluvial soils strewn across an ancient creek bed. The soils are light and packed with river rock and gravel. These well-drained soils, coupled with a warm growing region, encourage the vines to produce prodigious wines of great power. The wine exudes dark briary fruit and boasts a decadently ripe and powerful mouth-feel.

Vintage Notes

The 2023 growing season was all about patience. A very long, wet winter replenished the soils and filled our reservoirs. Cooler spring weather delayed budbreak and the start of the growing season by several weeks. Late spring saw moderate warmth and led to substantial canopy growth, as well as a healthy crop load on the vines. Mild, warm temperatures created perfect ripening conditions throughout the summer and early fall. The longer hang time allowed the fruit to reach optimum ripeness, and resulted in a superb vintage that is fresh, full of flavor, with great balance and fruit density.
